Equipment

  • Medium-sized pot with a tight-fitting lid
  • Strainer or fine-mesh sieve
  • Measuring cup
  • Wooden spoon (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of basmati rice
  • 2 cups of water (or chicken/vegetable broth for added flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon of butter or ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
  • Optional: 1-2 bay leaves, 4-5 cardamom pods, 1 small cinnamon stick, or a few cloves for extra fragrance

Instructions

  • Rinse the Rice
Start by rinsing the basmati rice under cold water. This step is essential to remove the excess starch that can make the rice sticky. Rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Soak the Rice
Soak the rinsed rice in water for about 20-30 minutes. This will help the grains cook more evenly and stay long and separate. If you're in a rush, you can skip this step, but soaking ensures the best results.
  • Boil Water or Broth
In a medium-sized pot, bring 2 cups of water (or broth for more flavor) to a boil. Add the salt, butter, or ghee to the water. If you want to infuse the rice with extra fragrance, you can add a couple of bay leaves, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, or cloves. These spices will enhance the aroma and taste.
  • Add the Rice
Once the water is boiling, add the soaked and drained rice into the pot. Stir gently to ensure the rice is evenly spread out. Bring the water back to a boil for a minute.
  • Simmer and Cook
Lower the heat to a simmer and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let the rice cook for about 15-20 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during this time as it can interrupt the cooking process. You’ll know the rice is done when the water has been absorbed and the grains are tender but still separate.
  • Let It Rest
Once the rice is cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, still covered, for about 5 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice and keeps it fluffy.
  • Fluff and Serve
After resting, use a fork to gently fluff the rice. This will separate the grains and give you that perfect, fluffy texture. Serve immediately with your favorite dish!
