Buttermilk Pie Recipe

Pinklady

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that the pie will bake evenly and cook through.
  • Prepare the Pie Crust
If you are using a store-bought pie crust, place it into your 9-inch pie pan. If you’re making your own pie crust, roll it out and fit it into the pie pan. You can also pre-bake the crust for 5–7 minutes if you like a crispier base, but this step is optional.
  • Mix the Filling
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, flour, vanilla extract, and salt. Make sure everything is well combined. Once that’s done, add the buttermilk and melted butter to the mixture. Continue to whisk until the batter is smooth and uniform.
  • Add the Nutmeg (Optional)
If you want to add a bit of spice to your buttermilk pie, sprinkle in ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg. It enhances the flavor and adds a warm, aromatic touch to the pie.
  • Pour the Filling into the Crust
Carefully pour the buttermilk filling into the prepared pie crust. Be sure to do this slowly to avoid spilling.
  • Bake the Pie
Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes. The pie is done when the center is set but slightly jiggles when shaken. It should turn golden brown around the edges. If the crust is browning too quickly, cover the edges with foil and continue baking.
  • Cool and Serve
Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes. The pie will firm up as it cools. Once cooled, slice, serve, and enjoy!
