Chicken Sandwich Recipe

Pinklady
Though chicken sandwiches have become a staple in fast-food chains and home kitchens worldwide, their origin is often linked to American cuisine. Some trace the rise of the chicken sandwich to the 1940s when fried chicken began gaining popularity in the U.S., with its convenience and crispy appeal. The chicken sandwich later evolved with various adaptations like grilled, spicy, or crispy versions, making it an incredibly versatile dish.

  • Paper towels for draining excess oil

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt1 egg (beaten)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crispiness)
  • 2 tablespoons oil for frying (or more, depending on your pan)

  • 4 burger buns or sandwich rolls
  • 1 tomato (sliced)
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices of cheese (optional)
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Mayonnaise, mustard, or your favorite sauce

Instructions

  • Prepare the Chicken Marinade
In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Place the chicken breasts into the buttermilk mixture and allow them to marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours in the fridge. This will help tenderize the chicken and infuse it with flavor.
  • Coat the Chicken
In a separate shallow dish, mix the flour and additional spices like paprika and garlic powder for added flavor.
  • If using breadcrumbs for extra crunch, set them aside in another dish.Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing the excess buttermilk to drip off.
  • Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture, ensuring it's evenly coated. For extra crispiness, dip the chicken back into a beaten egg and then into breadcrumbs.
  • Cook the Chicken
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Once hot, carefully place the coated chicken breasts in the pan.
Cook each side for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crispy, ensuring the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (75°C).
  • If baking, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the chicken on a baking sheet for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Assemble the Sandwich
Toast the buns lightly on a separate pan or in the oven for a crisp texture.Spread your favorite sauce (mayonnaise, mustard, etc.) on each bun.
  • Place the cooked chicken breast on the bottom half of the bun.Top with a slice of cheese (optional), lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Place the top bun on and press gently to hold everything together.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Serve your chicken sandwich with fries, salad, or a side of your choice. Enjoy immediately for the best flavor and texture.
