Hoisin Sauce Recipe

Pinklady
Hoisin sauce originates from China, where it has been a culinary staple for centuries. The word "hoisin" means "seafood" in Cantonese, though the sauce itself contains no seafood.

Equipment

  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Airtight container for storage

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter or black bean paste
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (or ½ teaspoon garlic powder)
  • ½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 teaspoons chili sauce (optional, for spice)
  • 3-4 tablespoons water (to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  • Gather Ingredients: Start by assembling all the ingredients on your workspace. Ensure everything is measured and ready to go for a smooth process.
  • Mix Base Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, peanut butter (or black bean paste), and honey (or brown sugar). Whisk until smooth and well blended.
  • Add Flavor Enhancers: Stir in rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and Chinese five-spice powder. If you prefer a spicy kick, add chili sauce at this stage.
  • Adjust Consistency: Gradually add water, one tablespoon at a time, whisking until you reach your desired consistency. A thicker sauce works well as a glaze, while a thinner version is perfect for marinades or dipping.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed. Add a little more soy sauce for saltiness or honey for sweetness if required.
  • Store: Transfer the sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate. It can be stored for up to two weeks.
