Equipment

  • Heatproof glass or mug
  • Spoon
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cup
  • Whisk or mixer for whipping cream

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) freshly brewed hot coffee
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 ½ ounces (45 ml) Irish whiskey
  • Freshly whipped cream (lightly whipped, not stiff)

Instructions

  • Warm the Glass: Start by warming your glass or mug. Fill it with hot water and let it sit for a minute or two. Empty the water before making your Irish Coffee.
  • Brew the Coffee: Brew a fresh cup of your favorite coffee. It should be hot and strong to balance the whiskey and cream.
  • Sweeten the Coffee: Add one tablespoon of brown sugar to the empty, warmed glass. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.
  • Add the Coffee: Pour the hot coffee into the glass, filling it about three-quarters full. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  • Add the Whiskey: Measure out 1 ½ ounces of Irish whiskey and pour it into the coffee. Stir gently to mix.
  • Top with Cream: Lightly whip the cream until it reaches a semi-thick consistency. It should be pourable but still able to float on top of the coffee. Use the back of a spoon to slowly pour the cream over the coffee, creating a distinct layer on top.
  • Serve Immediately: Serve your Irish Coffee immediately while it's hot. Sip through the cream for the perfect blend of flavors.
