Medium saucepan with a lid
Measuring cups and spoons
Strainer or fine-mesh sieve
Wooden spoon or rice paddle
- 1 cup jasmine rice
- 1 ½ cups water (or 2 cups for a softer texture)
- ¼ teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil (optional, for added richness)
Start by measuring 1 cup of jasmine rice. Place it in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold water. Rinsing removes excess starch, which helps prevent the rice from becoming overly sticky. Gently swish the rice with your fingers until the water runs clear, which typically takes about 1-2 minutes.
Add the rinsed jasmine rice to a medium saucepan. Pour in 1 ½ cups of water (or 2 cups for a softer texture). If you like, add a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of butter or oil for added flavor. Give it a quick stir to ensure the rice is evenly distributed.
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid. Make sure the lid fits tightly to keep the steam trapped inside.
Allow the rice to simmer for about 10-12 minutes without lifting the lid. The steam cooks the rice evenly, so resist the temptation to peek or stir! After 10 minutes, check for doneness by tilting the pot slightly to see if any water remains at the bottom.
Once all the water is absorbed, turn off the heat and leave the lid on. Let the rice rest for another 5-10 minutes. This resting period allows the rice grains to firm up, resulting in a fluffy texture.
After resting, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork or rice paddle. Serve immediately as a side dish with your favorite main course or store for later use in various recipes.
