Matcha Latte Recipe

Pinklady
Originating from Japan, matcha is a type of powdered green tea that’s been used in Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries. The tea is made from high-quality, shade-grown tea leaves, which are then ground into a fine powder.

Equipment

  • Small bowl or cup
  • Whisk (traditional bamboo whisk or electric frother)
  • Milk frother or saucepan (for heating milk)
  • Mug for serving

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp matcha powder (culinary grade or ceremonial grade for a richer taste)
  • 1/2 cup hot water (about 175°F or 80°C)
  • 1-2 tsp sweetener (optional, honey, maple syrup, or agave work well)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional, for added flavor)
  • 3/4 cup milk (dairy, almond, oat, or coconut)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Matcha
Sift the Matcha: Place 1 tsp of matcha powder in a small bowl or cup. Sifting the matcha helps remove any clumps and creates a smoother texture.
  • Add Hot Water: Pour about 1/2 cup of hot water over the matcha powder. Ensure the water is not boiling, as high temperatures can make the matcha taste bitter. Aim for around 175°F (80°C).
  • Whisk the Matcha: Using a bamboo whisk (or an electric frother), whisk the matcha powder and hot water together in a zigzag motion until a smooth, frothy mixture forms. This step ensures the matcha is well-dissolved, with a velvety layer of foam on top.
  • Heat and Froth the Milk
Heat the Milk: Warm 3/4 cup of milk of your choice in a small saucepan over medium heat until it’s hot but not boiling. If you prefer an iced matcha latte, skip this step and proceed to frothing.
  • Froth the Milk: Froth the milk using a handheld milk frother, or pour it into a frothing pitcher and froth manually. For a rich, foamy latte, froth the milk until it doubles in volume.
  • Sweeten and Assemble
Sweeten to Taste: If you like your matcha latte slightly sweet, add 1-2 tsp of your favorite sweetener and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract to the milk. Stir until fully dissolved.
  • Combine: Pour the matcha mixture into a mug, then gently pour the frothed milk over it. If you prefer an iced matcha latte, fill your cup with ice before adding the matcha and milk.
  • Optional: Sprinkle a pinch of matcha powder on top for garnish.
  • erve and Enjoy: Your creamy, vibrant matcha latte is ready! Enjoy it while hot or as a refreshing iced drink.
