Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring tools
  • Strainer
  • Martini or coupe glass
  • Citrus juicer
  • Small plate for sugar (if rimming the glass)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz (60 ml) cognac
  • 1 oz (30 ml) orange liqueur (such as Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist or orange peel, for garnish
  • Optional: sugar for rimming the glass

Instructions

  • If you prefer a sugared rim, start by running a lemon wedge around the edge of your glass. Pour a small amount of sugar onto a plate, then dip the rim of the glass into the sugar until it is evenly coated. Set the glass aside.
  • Using a jigger, measure out 2 oz of cognac, 1 oz of orange liqueur, and 3/4 oz of fresh lemon juice. Pour these ingredients into your cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker with ice cubes. This will chill the drink and help to balance the flavors.
  • Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. You’ll know it’s ready when the shaker becomes frosty on the outside.
  • Place a strainer over the shaker and pour the cocktail into your prepared glass. The drink should be smooth, with no ice chunks or pulp.
  • Add a lemon twist or orange peel for garnish. This not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the drink’s aroma.
  • Your Sidecar is ready to be enjoyed! Sip slowly and savor the balanced flavors of this classic cocktail.
