Taco Meat Recipe

Pinklady
Tacos have their origins in Mexico, dating back to the 18th century. The word "taco" is derived from the Nahuatl word "tlahco," meaning "half" or "in the middle," referring to the way food is traditionally placed in the center of a tortilla.

Equipment

  • Large skillet or pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for heat)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce (or salsa for extra flavor)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Optional: Juice of 1 lime for extra freshness

Instructions

  • Begin by gathering all the ingredients. Dice the onion, mince the garlic, and measure out the spices for easy access during cooking.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 3 minutes until it becomes translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Stir frequently to ensure even browning. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink.
  • If there’s excess fat in the skillet, carefully drain it out before proceeding to the next step. This will ensure that the meat doesn’t become greasy.
  • Stir in the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Mix the spices well into the meat to ensure even distribution.
  • Pour in the tomato sauce (or salsa) and water. Stir well to combine, then lower the heat to a simmer. Allow the mixture to cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.
  • Taste the meat and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you'd like a brighter flavor, squeeze in some fresh lime juice before serving.
  • Your taco meat is now ready! Serve it in warm tortillas with your favorite toppings like lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, or salsa.
