Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • A fork or masher for bananas
  • Whisk
  • 8x4-inch loaf pan
  • Parchment paper or non-stick cooking spray
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 2-3 ripe bananas
  • 1/3 cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup of honey or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts or dark chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare the loaf pan by lining it with parchment paper or using non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas using a fork or masher until smooth.
  • Add the unsweetened applesauce, honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Mix until well combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using).
  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the banana mixture until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • If you like, add chopped nuts or dark chocolate chips to the batter and gently stir.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The baking time may vary, so keep an eye on it.
  • Once done, remove the banana bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
