Banh Mi Recipe

Pinklady
The Banh Mi sandwich dates back to the French colonial period in Vietnam, when the French introduced baguettes. Over time, the Vietnamese adapted the baguette to suit their palate, replacing butter with mayonnaise, adding pickled vegetables, and incorporating savory meats like pork or pâté.

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Mixing bowls
  • Small saucepan
  • Baking sheet or grill pan
  • Tongs

Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 4 baguette rolls (preferably Vietnamese-style, light and airy)
  • 300g grilled or roasted pork (alternatively, chicken, beef, or tofu for a vegetarian option)
  • 1 medium cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro
  • 2-3 fresh jalapeños or chili slices (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

For the Pickled Vegetables

  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup daikon radish (or substitute with regular radish)
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pickled Vegetables
Combine vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until sugar dissolves, then let it cool.
  • Place shredded carrots and daikon radish in a bowl, pour the pickling liquid over them, and let sit for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  • Prepare the Protein
If using pork, chicken, or beef, season with soy sauce and grill or roast until fully cooked. For tofu, slice it into thick slabs, marinate with soy sauce, and pan-fry or grill.
  • Toast the Baguette
Slice each baguette roll lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through. Lightly toast them in the oven or on a grill for a crisp exterior.
  • Assemble the Sandwich
Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the inside of each baguette.
  • Add a layer of grilled protein.
  • Top with pickled vegetables, cucumber slices, jalapeños (if using), and fresh cilantro.
  • Drizzle lightly with soy sauce for an extra punch of flavor.
  • Serve and Enjoy!
Serve immediately while the bread is still warm and crunchy. Pair with a refreshing iced tea or lime soda for an authentic Vietnamese meal experience.
