Equipment

  • Large skillet or wok
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Tongs or a spatula
  • Whisk

Ingredients

For the Beef and Marinade:

  • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup beef or chicken broth

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Mix well until the beef is coated. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes. This step helps tenderize the beef and allows the flavor to penetrate the meat.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, cornstarch, and broth. Ensure the cornstarch is fully dissolved to prevent lumps in the sauce. Set aside.
  • Boil a pot of water and add the broccoli florets. Blanch them for 1 minute to brighten the color and soften them slightly. Drain and rinse under cold water to halt the cooking process. This keeps the broccoli tender-crisp.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the beef in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes until it browns, turning halfway through. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the minced garlic (and ginger if using) and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic as it can turn bitter.
  • Add the blanched broccoli to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes. Then, return the beef to the skillet. Pour the sauce over the beef and broccoli, stirring to coat everything evenly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.
  • Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove from heat. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles, and enjoy your homemade beef with broccoli!
