Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Pinklady
Chocolate chip cookies date back to the 1930s, when Ruth Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn, invented them by accident. Over the years, countless variations have emerged, but the addition of brown butter is a more modern twist.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Mixing bowls (large and medium)
  • Whisk and spatula
  • Electric mixer (optional)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, browned
  • 1 cup (200g) packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Add-ins:

  • 1 1/2 cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Brown the Butter
Place the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Melt the butter, swirling the pan occasionally.
As the butter foams, it will start to develop a golden-brown color and nutty aroma. This takes about 5-7 minutes.
Remove from heat and pour into a large mixing bowl. Let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients
Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to the browned butter. Whisk until smooth.
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
    Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Step 3: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Step 4: Fold in the Add-ins
Gently fold in the chocolate chips and nuts (if using) with a spatula.
  • Step 5: Chill the Dough
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes. This helps the flavors develop and prevents the cookies from spreading too much.
  • Step 6: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Step 7: Shape and Bake
Scoop out about 1-2 tablespoons of dough and roll into balls.
Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden and the centers look slightly underbaked.
  • Step 8: Cool and Serve
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool for 5 minutes.
Transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before serving.
