Buttermilk Waffles Recipe

Pinklady
Waffles originated in Europe during the Middle Ages, initially made as communion wafers before evolving into sweet and savory treats. The introduction of leavening agents in the 19th century made them fluffier and more versatile.

Equipment

  • Waffle iron
  • Mixing bowls (large and medium)
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ladle or measuring cup for pouring batter
  • Wire rack (optional, for cooling)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the Waffle Iron
Plug in your waffle iron and set it to the desired temperature. A medium setting typically works best for even cooking.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the leavening agents.
  • Prepare the Wet Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until slightly frothy. Add the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
  • Combine the Mixtures
Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a whisk or spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps in the batter are fine and will help keep the waffles light and fluffy.
  • Grease the Waffle Iron
Lightly grease the waffle iron plates with cooking spray or brush them with a small amount of melted butter
  • Cook the Waffles
Using a ladle or measuring cup, pour the batter into the center of the preheated waffle iron. Close the lid and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually 3-5 minutes, until the waffle is golden brown and crisp.
  • Serve or Keep Warm
Remove the waffle from the iron using tongs or a fork and place it on a wire rack to prevent it from becoming soggy. Serve immediately or keep warm in an oven set to 200°F while you prepare the remaining waffles.
