For the Cabbage Rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef or pork (or a mix)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg, beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sauce:
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparing the CabbageBoil the Cabbage: Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Carefully place the whole cabbage into the pot and cook for about 5 minutes until the outer leaves are tender. Remove the cabbage and let it cool. Separate the Leaves: Gently peel off the leaves one by one, being careful not to tear them. Set aside the largest leaves for rolling.
Making the FillingMix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Assembling the RollsPrepare the Leaves: Cut a V-shape at the base of each cabbage leaf to remove the tough stem.Fill and Roll: Place a spoonful of the meat mixture at the base of each leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly. Repeat until all the filling is used. Making the SauceCombine Sauce Ingredients: In a medium bowl, mix the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cooking the Cabbage RollsPreheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the Rolls: Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a baking dish.Pour the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well-covered. Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
