Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup milk (whole milk or any milk of your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional for added flavor)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients: Compile all of the cheese sauce's ingredients.Melt Butter: Use a medium saucepan over medium heat to melt the butter.
  • Add Flour: Stir the flour into the saucepan when the butter has melted. For about two minutes, or until the mixture turns golden brown and begins to smell nutty, whisk constantly.
  • Add Milk: To prevent lumps, gradually add the milk while whisking constantly. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, or until the sauce begins to thicken somewhat.
  • Add Cheese: To make a smooth and creamy sauce, add the grated cheddar cheese to the saucepan and stir until the cheese has melted completely.
  • Season: To taste, add more salt or pepper to the cheese sauce. To evenly integrate the seasoning, give it a good stir.
  • Serve: as soon as the sauce gets to your desired consistency, remove it from heat and serve immediately over pasta, or vegetables, or use it as a dip for chips or bread.
