Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Hand or stand mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Add-ins:

  • 1 ½ cups (225g) chocolate chips or chunks (semi-sweet or dark)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheet:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • Cream the Butter and Sugars:
In another large bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Incorporate the Eggs and Vanilla:
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Mix on low speed to avoid overmixing, stopping once everything is just combined.
  • Fold in the Chocolate Chips:
Gently fold in the chocolate chips or chunks with a spatula.
  • Scoop and Shape the Dough:
Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop evenly-sized dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each.
  • Bake the Cookies:
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should look slightly underdone in the center; they’ll firm up as they cool.
  • Cool and Serve:
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack. Enjoy warm or store for later!
