Pinklady
Apple pie itself has origins that date back to medieval Europe, but the Dutch have their unique spin. The Dutch were among the first to create this dessert by adding spices, sweeteners, and a crumb topping, using ingredients they had easy access to. Today, Dutch Apple Pie is a cherished classic worldwide, celebrated for its flaky crust, flavorful apple filling, and the signature streusel on top.

  • Pie dish (9-inch)
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pastry cutter (or fork for mixing)
  • Knife and peeler (for apples)
  • Oven

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ¼ cup ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced thinly
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (to keep apples from browning)

For the Streusel Topping:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to mix it into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add Ice Water: Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough starts to come together. Be careful not to overwork it.
  • Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  • Prepare the Apple Filling
Slice the Apples: Slice the peeled and cored apples thinly and place them in a large bowl.
  • Mix Ingredients: Add the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are well-coated.
  • Make the Streusel Topping
Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Cut in Butter: Add the cold butter cubes and mix until the mixture is crumbly. You can use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers.
  • Assemble the Pie
Roll Out the Dough: Take the dough out of the refrigerator and roll it out on a lightly floured surface until it fits your 9-inch pie dish.
  • Place in Pie Dish: Carefully lay the rolled-out dough into the pie dish, trimming any excess from the edges.
  • Add the Apple Filling: Pour the apple filling into the crust and spread it evenly.
  • Add the Streusel Topping: Sprinkle the streusel topping over the apples, making sure it covers them evenly.
  • Bake the Pie
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the Pie: Place the pie on the center rack and bake for 50-60 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  • Cool: Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. This helps the filling to set.
