Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Large Skillet
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Colander

Ingredients

  • 500g (1 lb) of fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons slivered almonds (optional, for texture)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Green Beans
Wash the green beans thoroughly under running water.
  • Trim the ends of the green beans using a knife.
  • Blanch the Green Beans
Bring a medium saucepan of salted water to a boil.
  • Add the green beans to the boiling water and blanch for 3–4 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender.
  • Immediately transfer the beans to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. This step keeps the beans crisp and vibrant.
  • Drain the beans using a colander and set them aside.
  • Sauté the Garlic
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  • Add the Green Beans
Add the blanched green beans to the skillet.
  • Toss them gently to coat them in the garlic and olive oil mixture.
  • Sprinkle in red pepper flakes for a spicy kick (optional).
  • Season and Finish
Season the green beans with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the beans and toss to combine.
  • If using Parmesan cheese or slivered almonds, sprinkle them over the beans for added flavor and texture.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Serve the green beans warm as a side dish or light entrée. Pair them with grilled chicken, fish, or a hearty pasta for a complete meal.
