Pinklady
Fried shrimp traces its roots to the Southern United States, where it became a popular dish due to the region’s abundance of fresh seafood. This crispy delicacy is also influenced by tempura-style frying, introduced to Japan by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. Over time, fried shrimp gained worldwide recognition as a quick and flavorful seafood dish.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Deep frying pan or skillet
  • Slotted spoon or tongs
  • Paper towels
  • Serving plate

Ingredients

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 pound (450g) raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

For the Coating:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra flavor)

For Frying:

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Optional Garnish and Dips:

  • Lemon wedges
  • Tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, or spicy mayo

Instructions

  • Prepare the Shrimp
Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  • Season the shrimp with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, ensuring even coating.
  • Set Up the Coating Stations
Place flour in a shallow bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until smooth.
  • In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs with paprika for extra flavor.
  • Coat the Shrimp
Dredge each shrimp in the flour, ensuring it’s lightly coated. Shake off any excess.
  • Dip the shrimp into the beaten eggs, coating it evenly.
  • Finally, press the shrimp into the breadcrumbs, covering all sides. Set the coated shrimp aside on a plate.
  • Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Test the oil by dropping in a breadcrumb—if it sizzles, it’s ready.
  • Fry the Shrimp
Carefully add the shrimp to the hot oil in small batches. Avoid overcrowding to ensure even cooking.
  • Fry each batch for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the shrimp to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Plate the fried shrimp, garnish with lemon wedges, and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
