Mango Sticky Rice Recipe

Mango sticky rice is deeply rooted in Thai culinary traditions and is particularly popular during mango season, from March to June. Its origins can be traced back to Thailand's farming communities, where sticky rice was a staple.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan or rice cooker
  • Small saucepan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth (for steaming rice, if applicable)
  • Sharp knife and cutting board

Ingredients
  

For the sticky rice:

  • 1 cup glutinous (sticky) rice
  • 1 ½ cups water

For the coconut sauce:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For serving:

  • 2 large ripe mangoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions
 

  • Rinse the rice: Place the glutinous rice in a bowl and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and ensures the rice isn’t too sticky.
  • Soak the rice: Soak the rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results. If you're short on time, an hour is the minimum soaking time.
  • Cook the rice: Drain the soaked rice and steam it in a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over boiling water for 25–30 minutes, or until tender. Alternatively, you can cook it in a rice cooker with 1 ½ cups of water.
  • Make the Coconut Sauce
    Heat the coconut milk: In a small saucepan, combine the coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the sugar dissolves. Do not let it boil.
  • Combine with rice: Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a bowl and gradually pour in about ¾ of the coconut milk mixture. Mix well, cover, and let the rice absorb the flavors for 10–15 minutes. Reserve the remaining sauce for drizzling.
  • Prepare the Mango
    Slice the mangoes into thin strips or cubes. For a neat presentation, try to keep the slices uniform.
  • Assemble and Serve
    Scoop a portion of sticky rice onto a plate. Arrange the mango slices beside the rice.
  • Drizzle the reserved coconut sauce over the rice and garnish with toasted sesame seeds if desired.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!
