Equipment

  • Large skillet or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, grated or finely chopped (optional for sweetness)
  • 1 can (14 oz/400 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) beef or chicken broth (or water)
  • 1 tsp dried basilx
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Fresh parsley or basil (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients:
Chop the onion, mince the garlic, and grate or finely chop the carrot if using. Gather all your ingredients to streamline the cooking process.
  • Sauté the Aromatics:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, being careful not to burn it.
  • Cook the Meat:
Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  • Add the Carrot and Tomato Paste:
Stir in the grated carrot and cook for 2–3 minutes. Add the tomato paste and mix well, letting it cook for another minute to enhance its flavor.
  • Combine the Liquids and Spices:
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and broth. Add the dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  • Simmer the Sauce:
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the sauce simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
  • Adjust the Seasoning:
Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or spices as needed.
  • Serve and Garnish:
Serve the meat sauce over your favorite pasta, rice, or as a filling for lasagna. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil if desired.
