Monkey Bread Recipe

Pinklady
Monkey bread’s exact origins are a bit murky, but it’s believed to have roots in Hungarian cuisine. The dish, known as “Arany Galuska” or golden dumplings, was brought to America by Hungarian immigrants. Over time, it evolved into what we now call monkey bread, gaining popularity in the 1950s and 60s, especially as a party or holiday dish.

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Stand mixer with dough hook attachment (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Bundt pan
  • Small saucepan
  • Pastry brush
  • Plastic wrap or clean kitchen towel

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs

For the coating:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
Add the melted butter, eggs, and salt to the yeast mixture, then whisk to combine.
Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until the dough comes together.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes) until it’s smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Coating
In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
Melt the butter in a separate bowl.
  • Step 3: Assemble the Monkey Bread
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small, walnut-sized balls.
Roll each ball in the melted butter, then coat it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Place the coated dough balls into a greased Bundt pan, layering them evenly.
  • Step 4: Make the Glaze
In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Heat over medium-low heat until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.
Pour the glaze evenly over the assembled dough balls in the Bundt pan.
  • Step 5: Bake and Serve
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cover the pan loosely with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
Let the monkey bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving plate. Serve warm and enjoy!
