Cuisine Italian
- 28 ounces (800g) of canned whole tomatoes
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup (60ml) extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
- Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until it turns golden, which should take about 1-2 minutes.
Crush the canned tomatoes using your hands or a wooden spoon and add them to the saucepan. Be careful as the tomatoes can splatter.
Stir in salt, sugar, and dried oregano. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together. Stir occasionally.
