New England Beach Pizza Recipe

Pinklady
Originating from small pizza parlors along the Massachusetts and New Hampshire coasts in the mid-20th century, New England Beach Pizza gained popularity for its simplicity and flavor. Unlike traditional Italian pizza, this version features a thin, crispy crust, a generous spread of slightly sweet tomato sauce, and a sprinkling of shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese.

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet or pizza stone
  • Rolling Pin
  • Saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup canned tomato puree
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Toppings:

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • 6-8 slices of provolone cheese (optional, for authenticity)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until frothy.
Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let it rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Step 2: Make the Sauce
Combine ingredients: In a saucepan, mix tomato puree, sugar, salt, oregano, garlic powder, and olive oil.
Simmer: Cook on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  • Step 3: Assemble the Pizza
Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F. If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while preheating.
Shape the dough: Divide the dough into two portions. Roll each portion into a thin rectangle or circle, depending on your preference.
Prepare the crust: Place the dough on a greased baking sheet or a pizza stone. Prick the surface lightly with a fork to prevent bubbling.
Add the sauce: Spread a thin layer of the prepared tomato sauce evenly over the dough.
Add the cheese: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or provolone over the sauce. For an authentic touch, add a slice of provolone to the center of each piece.
  • Step 4: Bake the Pizza
Bake: Place the pizza in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Cool and slice: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice into squares or traditional wedges and serve.
