Potato Casserole Recipe

Pinklady
Potatoes have been a staple in many cuisines for centuries, thanks to their versatility and affordability. The casserole itself dates back to the early 20th century, when home cooks sought to create hearty, one-dish meals using simple ingredients. Over time, the dish evolved to include creamy sauces, cheese, and other ingredients that add layers of flavor.

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
  • Medium saucepan
  • 9x13-inch casserole dish
  • Aluminum foil

Ingredients

  • 6 medium potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter (plus extra for greasing)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional, for garnish)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional, for a crispy topping)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with butter and set aside.
  • Prepare the potatoes:
Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes. Use a mandoline slicer if you have one to ensure even slices.
  • Make the sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the heavy cream, milk, salt, and pepper. Heat until warm (do not boil).
  • Layer the casserole:
Place a single layer of sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Pour a small amount of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with cheddar cheese and Parmesan. Repeat the process until all ingredients are used, ending with a generous layer of cheese on top.
  • Add the breadcrumbs (optional):
If you want a crispy topping, mix breadcrumbs with a tablespoon of melted butter and sprinkle evenly over the cheese.
  • Bake the casserole:
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Garnish and serve:
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and a dash of paprika, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
