- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- Optional add-ins: dried fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
Pour the milk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
If desired, gently fold in any optional add-ins, such as dried fruit or chocolate chips.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times until it comes together.
Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thickness and use a round cookie cutter or knife to cut out scone shapes.
Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
Remove from the oven and allow the scones to cool slightly before serving.
