Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet or flat griddle
  • Spatula
  • Cooking oil or butter

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended for optimal flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sliced cheese (optional)
  • Burger buns
  • Toppings of your choice (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc.)
  • Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.)

Instructions

  • Preheat your cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently form each portion into a loose ball.
  • Season each ball of meat generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • Place a ball of meat onto the hot skillet or griddle, then immediately press down firmly with a spatula to flatten it into a thin patty. The thinner, the better for that crispy edge!
  • Cook the patties for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they develop a caramelized crust and reach your desired level of doneness.
  • If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.
  • Toast the burger buns on the griddle for extra flavor and texture.
  • Assemble your smash burgers by placing the patties on the bottom buns and topping with your favorite fixings and condiments.
  • Serve hot and enjoy the irresistible goodness of homemade smash burgers!
