Yeast Rolls Recipe

Pinklady
Yeast rolls trace their origins back to ancient Egypt, where yeast was first used in breadmaking. Over time, bread rolls became popular across Europe, especially in France and England. They eventually made their way to the Americas, becoming a classic addition to holiday meals and family gatherings. The secret to their irresistible texture lies in the slow fermentation of yeast, which gives the rolls their fluffy rise and distinct flavor.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or stand mixer with dough hook
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Kitchen thermometer (optional but helpful)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Clean kitchen towel

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • Extra butter for brushing (optional)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.
  • Mix the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, egg, and softened butter to the flour mixture. Stir until the dough begins to come together.
  • Knead the Dough
If using a stand mixer, knead on medium speed for 8 minutes. For hand-kneading, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  • Shape the Rolls
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
  • Second Rise
Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes, until puffy.
  • Bake the Rolls
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Brush the warm rolls with melted butter for an extra buttery flavor. Serve immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container.
